Job summary

The SQF practitioner is responsible for overseeing the implementation, maintenance, and continuous improvement of the SQF food safety and quality system. This role ensures compliance with the SQF code, regulatory requirements, and customer standards while promoting a strong food safety culture throughout the organization.

Key responsibilities

Develop, implement, and maintain the SQF food safety management system. 

Ensures compliance with the latest SQF code, customer requirements, and applicable food safety regulations.

Lead the HACCP plan development, validation, verification and annual reviews. 

Coordinate internal audits, supplier audits, and 3rd party certification audits. 

Investigate food safety incidents, customer complaints, nonconformities, and implement corrective and preventative actions (CAPA). 

Manage document control, records, and food safety procedures.

Monitor key food safety and quality performance indicators.

Conduct risk assessments and support preventative controls.

Provide food safety and SQF training to employees and promote food safety awareness.

Coordinate management review meetings and report food safety performance. 

Collaborate with production, maintenance, sanitation, purchasing, and quality teams to ensure compliance.

Stay current with changes to SQF requirements, an industry best practice, and applicable regulations.

Review product labels, ingredient lists, and Nutrition Facts Table (NFT) development to meet Canadian regulatory requirements.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in food science, microbiology, biology, chemistry, or a related field preferred.

Certified SQF practitioner eligible to serve as SQF practitioner under the SQF code.

HACCP certification.

2 to 5+ years’ experience in food manufacturing or food quality assurance.

 Knowledge of GMPs, SSOPs, FDA/CFIA regulations (or other applicable regulations), allergen management, and food safety systems. 

Experience with internal and external audits.

Skills

Strong knowledge of food safety management systems.

Excellent problem solving and root cause analysis skills.

Effective communication and leadership abilities.

Attention to detail and strong organizational skills.

Promotes a culture of food safety and quality throughout the organization.

Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines.

Proficiencies with Microsoft Office and quality management software.
