Food & Beverage Manitoba presents Lee McCabe, North America VP/GM of Alibaba Group
Winnipeg, Manitoba – Retailers in Canada are realizing more and more that consumers are changing the way they shop for their foods and beverages. In 2015, there were 18 million digital buyers throughout the country, spending approximately $26 billion, putting Canada in 8th place on the Global eCommerce Rankings.
The fastest growing consumer market in the world is in China, and according to Lee McCabe, North America VP/GM of Alibaba Group, “We can’t source enough Canadian products for our global markets.”
The base of Alibaba’s market in China is young, middle class shoppers who view foreign foods as “affordable luxuries”. Alibaba, one of the world’s largest online commerce companies, has been targeting suppliers from around the world to capitalize on China’s growing appetite for global food and beverages.
There is an opportunity with Alibaba for fresh, frozen, and shelf stable foods and beverages in all product categories, with particular demand for specialty products from small-scale processors. With Manitoba’s largest industry being food and beverage processing it is only natural that McCabe has his sights set on the province. “To be able to present Manitoba’s food and beverage industry on a global level, and to have Lee here to talk to our producers on how to achieve that, is a huge step in the right direction,” says Dave Shambrock, Executive Director of Food & Beverage Manitoba. “It would show the world what we already know, and that’s that Manitoba produces some of the best foods and beverages.”
The current trends suggest that eCommerce growth will continue. Loblaws Companies Ltd. recently announced the investment of $1.3 billion into their growing eCommerce platform. By 2018, researchers are expecting that Canada will have approximately 20 million digital buyers, bringing the eCommerce market total to nearly $40 billion.
McCabe will be the Keynote Speaker at Food & Beverage Manitoba’s Industry Day 2017 and Annual General Meeting, speaking on The Future of Commerce in a Connected World. He believes that China must be a part of all-sized retailers’ eCommerce strategies, saying “we have massive demand in China right now for Canadian products and brands, and it’s growing every day. We can’t sign companies up quickly enough.”
